EMBA Faculty and Students Visit Vietnamese Enterprises: Exploring Core Industries in Da Nang and Sharing Experiences of Taiwanese Business Success

The delegation visited several renowned local enterprises, including Caesar Sanitary Ware, Cheng Shing Piston Company, and Uni-President (Vietnam). They also held discussion forums with members of the Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce in Da Nang and local alumni. Through this comprehensive, on-site learning experience, the program provided participants with valuable opportunities for cross-border industrial insights and collaboration.The first scheduled stop of the trip was a visit to Foxlink Vietnam, a globally renowned manufacturer of electronic components specializing in high-tech products such as precision connectors, wireless communication, and optoelectronic integration. However, due to Foxlink's unexpected maintenance of its IT systems, the company was unable to host the delegation, which was a source of some regret. Additionally, the trip faced challenges from heavy rains in Da Nang, adding complexity to the itinerary. Nevertheless, the participants remained determined and enthusiastic, fully engaging in the subsequent visits. The rest of the itinerary included visits to companies in the sanitary ware, manufacturing, and food and feed industries, providing an in-depth understanding of these sectors’ development strategies in the Vietnamese market. Through discussions with senior executives, participants gained clearer insights into Vietnam’s industrial environment and economic trends, conducted market evaluations, and achieved significant learning outcomes.Next, the participants visited Caesar Sanitar, a leading player in Vietnam's sanitary ware industry. Known for its exceptional product design and quality management, Caesar has steadily grown its presence in the Vietnamese market. During the visit, company representatives shared Caesar's market strategies and provided an in-depth analysis of local consumer preferences and trends in the sanitary ware industry, offering participants valuable insights into the potential of Vietnam's domestic market. At Cheng Shing Piston Company, participants observed the complete manufacturing process of precision pistons. As one of Vietnam's key suppliers of automotive components, General Manager Chen explained the company's efforts in enhancing product quality and advancing technology. He also shared insights into the future development trends of Vietnam's automotive industry. The visit allowed participants to appreciate the dedication of traditional manufacturing industries to technological innovation and quality management.Finally, the participants visited the Uni-President (Vietnam)'s Quang Nam plant, a leader in the food industry. The company specializes in producing aquatic feed, livestock feed, flour, and instant noodles, boasting a comprehensive product line and exceptional quality. During the visit, Manager Xin-Bi Wang not only introduced the production processes but also guided the participants through a hands-on tour of the production line. He provided an in-depth analysis of market demand and competitive advantages in Vietnam's food processing industry. The visit offered participants fresh perspectives on leveraging local market analysis and product positioning to enhance business competitiveness.During the visit, the EMBA participants engaged in discussions with Zhi-Cheng Xu, President of the Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce in Da Nang, board members, and alumni of the National University of Kaohsiung in Vietnam. The discussions covered local economic development and industry trends. Alumni shared their hands-on experiences in the Vietnamese market, including investment evaluation, regulatory risks, industry challenges, and future prospects, providing valuable insights for the participants. President Xu also shared the lessons learned from years of Taiwanese business development in Vietnam, emphasizing the market’s potential and the importance of local collaboration. This gave participants a deeper understanding of the unique characteristics and opportunities within the Vietnamese market. The exchange sparked numerous valuable insights and opened up new possibilities for academic-industry collaboration. The visit coincided with typhoons affecting both Taiwan and Vietnam, but faculty and students persevered through the challenging weather. After thorough safety assessments, the group successfully completed the itinerary as planned, demonstrating a "confidence in the storm" mindset. This experience gave participants a profound appreciation for the resilience and adaptability required in business operations while highlighting the enthusiasm for learning and determination to broaden international perspectives that Kaohsiung University EMBA students embody. A notable highlight of the trip occurred during the return flight. As the plane prepared for takeoff, a surprising announcement came over the cabin speakers: “This is your co-pilot for today’s flight, Bo-Xun Zhan…” The announcement sparked excitement among the participants, as Bo-Xun Zhan was a distinguished alumnus from the inaugural cohort of the Taitung EMBA program at NUK. The students felt immense pride and honor in returning to Kaohsiung aboard a flight co-piloted by one of their own.Despite being carried out amidst challenging weather and unforeseen circumstances, the corporate visit was filled with learning opportunities and delightful surprises. This experience underscored that NUK's EMBA program is not only a platform for academic growth but also a lifelong network for collaboration and mutual advancement. The program emphasizes not just theoretical learning in the classroom but also the development of practical skills through international industry visits. NUK 24th Anniversary Celebration, joining hands with the TAIDE project from the Science & Technology Policy Research and Information Center.

In her speech, President Chen Yueh-Tuan pointed out that NUK has achieved fruitful results in its academic affairs, including collaborations with the Ministry of Education's Sports Administration and the Ministry of Labor's Workforce Development to foster technological talents and establish training bases. During the ceremony, NUK also signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Science and Technology Policy Research and Information Center, jointly launching the "Generative Artificial Intelligence Service Platform," becoming the first university in Taiwan to utilize the "Trustworthy AI Dialogue Engine (TAIDE)." Minister Kuan Bi-Ling of the Ocean Affairs Council and Chairman Lee Shun-chin of CPC Corporation, Taiwan, attended the ceremony to express their support. In particular, NUK actively responds to national policies by establishing a football division in the Department of Sports and Competitive Games, connecting with the cultivation of fourth-level football talents, and establishing a football team. With a fresh approach, NUK clinched the championship in the collegiate football league last year (academic year 111), advancing to the men's second division and securing qualification for the Taiwan Football League Division 2. Associate Professor Wu Chun-Hsing from the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering is a vital member of the TAIDE development team.Lee Yu-Chieh pointed out that TAIDE is Taiwan's first trustworthy generative AI engine. Both government and enterprises can choose the appropriate model size and measure the computing power according to their needs, enabling them to train or construct internal applications. Moreover, TAIDE possesses two distinctive features: "Based on Taiwanese culture" and "Security." The former integrates elements such as local language, values, and customs, enabling it to understand and respond to the needs of local users. The latter utilizes on-device technology to protect personal data from being transmitted over the internet.On the school anniversary day, the Library and Information Center held the opening ceremony of artist Huang Huansheng's "Deep Affection of the Jiǎzǐ Year - Art Exhibition." The works showcased abundant creative energy, bringing an artistic feast to faculty, students, and the public, embodying the spirit of greatness and community prosperity. The sports meet occurred at the athletics field, featuring various events, including creative performances by students and faculty from multiple departments, track and field events, fun competitions, and tug-of-war. "UI GreenMetric World University Rankings": NUK Advances to 285th Place, Achieving Success in Promoting Environmental Sustainability.

In the latest "UI GreenMetric World University Rankings," NUK's global ranking has risen from 319th to 285th place, entering the top quarter. This reflects the university's commitment to incorporating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into its core administrative governance, successfully practicing and promoting the concept of a green university.President Yueh-Tuan Chen of the National University of Kaohsiung (NUK) stated that linking with society and industries, and responding to national policies, has always been the school's goal. In 2022, NUK took the lead in responding to the government's "Net Zero 2050" policy, declaring its commitment to the direction of becoming a "green university." In addition, the university has been actively installing public art to shape the cultural atmosphere on campus and promote environmental education. These efforts have contributed to the positive results in the "UI GreenMetric World University Rankings," and President Chen attributes this success to the collective efforts of all faculty, staff, and students. NUK will continue its endeavors in promoting environmental sustainability, education, and research.The "UI GreenMetric World University Rankings" is constructed based on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) indicators, with evaluation categories encompassing "Setting and Infrastructure," "Energy and Climate Change," "Waste," "Water," "Transportation," and "Education and Research." The 2023 edition of this ranking was organized by Universitas Indonesia and was released last month on December 5th. A total of 1,183 universities from 84 countries participated in the competition, including 31 universities from Taiwan.The Office of General Affairs at the National University of Kaohsiung (NUK) took the lead in participating in this ranking. Mr. Shih-Heng Tung, the Dean of General Affairs, pointed out that NUK has been actively applying for the ranking since 2022, and the university's performance has improved consistently. Moving from 319th place in 2022 to 285th place in 2023, significant improvements were observed in all six evaluation categories. This indicates the continuous refinement of the university's environmental strategies and practices.For example, in the "Setting and Infrastructure" category, the National University of Kaohsiung (NUK) in Taiwan is ranked 8th among participating schools. This recognition is attributed to the university's commitment to environmental sustainability from its inception, marked by the signing of the "Talloires Declaration (June 5, 2004)," making it the first green university in Taiwan. The university's campus, formerly agricultural fields and fishponds acquired through land requisition by the Kaohsiung City Government, spans 82.5 hectares. After a series of environmental restoration efforts, the campus now boasts a forest and vegetation coverage of 51.64%.Furthermore, within the NUK campus, there are ecological ponds, East Lake, ecological water channels, and natural watercourse. In addition, there are 10 pieces of public art scattered throughout the campus, including installations like "Le Zai Yiqi (Have fun together)." The university has also integrated the surrounding 300 hectares into a university community, promoting environmental education and management under the concept of the "lung of the community." This approach not only attracts people for recreation but also facilitates outdoor education.In the "Transportation" category, the National University of Kaohsiung (NUK) stands out, ranking 10th among participating schools in Taiwan. This recognition is attributed to several measures, such as controlling motorcycle access to the campus. All motorcycles of faculty, staff, and students, except for delivery and official vehicles, are required to be parked in designated areas. Additionally, NUK has collaborated with the Kaohsiung CityGovernment and YouBike, implementing 10 bike-sharing stations across the campus. This initiative facilitates easy movement for faculty, staff, students, and the public. "2023 AVA Symposium" – Focused on Sustainable Economy and Entrepreneurship with Educational Partners from 6 Countries and 8 Schools.

The central theme of the event was "Sustainable Economy and Entrepreneurship." The symposium coincided in person and online, with scholars from Taiwan, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, India, Japan, and other countries presenting their research findings. The event provided a platform for exchanging cultural characteristics and expanding international perspectives, fostering diverse communication. The Office of International Affairs of NUK organized the symposium and marked the event's second edition this year. It was jointly hosted with Bicol University, the sister school in the Philippines, specifically by the College of Business, Economics, and Management.Wu Hsing-Hao, the Dean of International Affairs, stated that in 2021, the establishment of the Asia Virtual Academy (AVA) aimed to invite like-minded domestic and international higher education partners. This initiative included collaboration with domestic institutions such as National Chung Hsing University and National Pingtung University, as well as sister schools in Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, India, Japan, and other countries. The goal was to promote the ideals of "international exchange," "expand students' international perspectives," and "respect and understand diverse cultures." Virtual symposiums or lectures were instrumental in overcoming the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.Wu Hsing-Hao mentioned that as the COVID-19 situation in various countries gradually improved, the symposium held in June marked the first simultaneous physical and online forum. Scholars and students from sister schools worldwide actively participated, generating enthusiastic responses. This year's upcoming event, the second edition, will focus on sustainable economy, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Participants will share insights on a low-carbon society, green architecture, and green economy.Wu Hsing-Hao emphasized that since the inception of AVA, four series of lectures and international symposiums have been conducted. One thousand two hundred fifty individuals have actively participated and obtained certificates, while the content has been viewed 36,410 times on the YouTube channel. The symposiums continue to deepen collaboration among the six countries and eight partner schools in the Asia Virtual Academy and provide participants with a rich academic exchange platform. Furthermore, they contribute to raising the visibility of Taiwan's education on the international stage.The Director of the EMBA Center at NUK, Weng Ming-Chang, and the team led by Dimson Rivero, Dean of the CBEM at Bicol University in the Philippines, shared insights on various topics. EMBA Executive Director Li Ting-Lin Leads Startup Terrace Kaohsiung to Participate in SWITCH in Singapore to Expand Southeast Asian Market

Since its inception, this program has facilitated at least 13 business collaborations, resulting in approximately 30 million New Taiwan Dollars in opportunities. Both parties recommended promising startups that utilize core technologies such as 5G, AI, and IoT, focusing on applications related to digital transformation, smart cities, smart manufacturing and logistics, innovative healthcare, and green technology. Through overseas training and exchanges, mentorship, and further engagement with Taiwan's New Southbound Policy, the program aims to lead Taiwanese startups in expanding into the Southeast Asian market. This year, in addition to jointly participating in the annual SWITCH event in Singapore with the National Development Council under the "Startup Island Taiwan" initiative, they also conducted on-site training in Singapore with their strategic partner, ACE. The program in Singapore included arranging demo pitches for Taiwanese startups and inviting local investors and corporate partners in Singapore to hear their fundraising presentations to achieve business opportunities or fund partnerships. Furthermore, they led the startups to engage with local startup development organizations and venture capitalists in Singapore, such as Genesis Alternative Ventures and A*STAR - Agency for Science. The program also included visits to the regional headquarters of multinational corporations like Microsoft Singapore and LaunchPad—key communities and organizations, including Enterprise Singapore ACE.SG, NUS Enterprise, BLOCK71, and others were part of the exchange and interaction. Currently, the team is still in Singapore for comprehensive training to integrate into the ASEAN ecosystem.This year's SWITCH exhibition was co-hosted by Professor Li Ting-Lin, the Startup Terrace Kaohsiung Program's co-project leader and NUK professor. She led a delegation of 8 startups, which included Taiwan Carbon Materials, JMEM Technology, Ness Wellness, Data Yoo Application, TAC Dynamics, iAMBITION, Crypto-Arsenal, and Raputa Inc. The team has expressed that they have been discussing fundraising and market entry with various local and international venture capital firms. They have also initiated potential business opportunities with companies like ContiTech, Singapore Polytech, and SMT Tech.Startup Terrace Kaohsiung will continue exploring business opportunities in the Southeast Asian market. They aim to facilitate Taiwanese startups in connecting with international resources and funding opportunities, thereby increasing the exposure of these startups on a global scale. They plan to establish regular bilateral exchange and ground services with Singapore to enhance both sides' business insights and resource matching.
