【Translator:Zhi-Yu Yang】【Promotion of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) series】2023-09-27 National University of Kaohsiung's Department of Information Management Associate Professor Lin Hsin-Tzu supervised students, including Hong Li-Cheng, Wang Zheng-Heng, Yan Zhi-Hao, and Zhou En-Xi, in their participation in the "2023 Data Innovation Application Competition and Interior Hackathon" hosted by the Ministry of the Interior. Recognizing the challenges young entrepreneurs face, they proposed "Assisting People in Entrepreneurship" as the core theme of their project. They competed with talents from across Taiwan and successfully advanced to the quarterfinal. This showcased their youthful creativity and applied the knowledge learned in the classroom to leverage the power of data to address real societal issues.Lin Hsin-Tzu and the IF-School(Imagination for Future School) jointly offer the course 'Data and Design Thinking,' aiming to empower students with data awareness applications and enhance their 'information soft power.' At the same time, they encourage participation in the Interior Hackathon competition to learn from the wise and accumulate practical experience. The team composed of students from the Department of Information Management at the National University of Kaohsiung, including senior Hong Li-Cheng, sophomore Wang Zheng-Heng, and Yan Zhi-Hao, along with Zhou En-Xi, discovered from government open data that Taiwanese youth face numerous challenges in the entrepreneurial process. Therefore, they proposed the service theme "Sao Nian! Ni Ke Wang Chuang Yeh Ma? (Youth! Do You Aspire to Start-Up?)" intending to assist users in overcoming various difficulties encountered during the entrepreneurial process. To enhance the depth and breadth of their competition entries, students, including Hong Li-Cheng, also participated in the "When Board Games Meet SDGs" workshop organized by the IF-School(Imagination for Future School). They learned to apply a "global sustainability perspective" to understand local societal issues, including SDG 4.4, which aims to substantially increase the number of youth and adults who have relevant skills, including technical and vocational skills, for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship, and SDG 8.3, which focuses on supporting decent employment, entrepreneurship, creativity, and innovation.Advanced Business Incubation Center Manager Liu Jian-Cheng and Vice Manager Chen Ying-Lian also provided consultation, assisting the team in constructing a blueprint for service development to create the "Sao Nian! (Youth!)" entrepreneurial information service platform. Its highlights include "map searching" and "analysis of the business model matrix," which help young entrepreneurs enhance their efficiency in gathering government policies, regulations, information, startup resources, and even potential competition in the industry. This platform offers them a better chance to excel and stand out. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Ministry of the Interior Hackathon competition, and it has expanded significantly. Government departments such as the Ministry of the Interior's Department of Statistics, the Central Weather Bureau, the Information Department of the Ministry of Labor, and the Department of Information Technology, Taipei City Government have all joined the list of organizers. This not only makes the competition more closely aligned with societal needs but also increases its level of challenge.#SDG4 #SDG8

Olympic canoeing's 8-time gold medalist, Birgit Fischer, sharing her journey to success and the path she took to achieve her remarkable medal-winning accomplishments.

sdgs icon sdgs icon
【Translator: Zhi-Yu Yang】【Promotion of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) series】2023-09-08 National University of Kaohsiung's College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Kinesiology, Health and Leisure Studies, in collaboration with the D.C.S. Education Foundation in Taichung and the Distinguished Citizens Society of the R.O.C. jointly invited the Olympic canoeing champion with eight gold medals, the German Birgit Fischer, to share her journey of self-improvement with the theme "My Road to Gold: Yes, You Can!" with the entire school's students and faculty. Using her life as an example, Fischer emphasized the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle after retirement from professional sports. She encouraged regular exercise for physical health, mental well-being, and resilience.Birgit Fischer's inaugural lecture took place at the National University of Kaohsiung, with the university's President, Yueh-Tuan Chen, in attendance to extend her warm welcome and appreciation. President Chen highlighted that outstanding athletes possess innate talent, undergo dedicated training, and employ strategies to enhance their chances of winning medals, including using sports technology. Birgit Fischer's incredible determination and self-management skills exemplify the legendary achievement of winning eight gold medals in the Women's Canoe event at the Olympics. Her story serves as a valuable source of inspiration for all university faculty and students, and the event was open to the general public, reflecting the university's commitment to connecting with industry and society, and growing in harmony with the local community.Birgit Fischer is hailed as a legendary Olympic athlete from Germany. She was born in 1962 in East Brandenburg, Germany. At the age of 3, her father discovered her exceptional talent, and by the age of 6, she was introduced to canoeing. Olympic canoeing events include singles, doubles, and fours, testing balance and team synchronization. Fischer went on to compete in six Olympic Games, amassing an impressive total of eight gold medals and four silver medals. She also achieved 27 World Championship titles. Notably, she holds the record for being both the youngest and oldest gold medalist in Olympic history, making her an exceptional athlete.Fischer mentioned that during her competitive years, she was an active athlete, a university student, and a mother of two children. Balancing her career, education, family, and social life required careful time and energy management. For example, she adhered to a routine of going to bed and waking up early, even getting up at 4 AM to work on her graduation thesis. She shared that her mental resilience was the key to her success in winning gold medals. Maintaining a calm and composed mindset was crucial, especially since she is not particularly tall (compared to most German athletes). She relied on solid training to strengthen her skills and resilience to stand out. Additionally, she understood that victories and defeats are a part of sports, and she never let losses deter her. Instead, she used them as opportunities for self-improvement and growth.Fischer also revealed that despite her numerous gold medal wins, the prize money was insufficient to sustain her livelihood and support her family. Therefore, besides excelling in her sporting career, she took on roles as a physical education teacher and started her own company. She ventured into promoting her brand image and pursued diversified business endeavors to secure her financial stability.#SDG3 #SDG4
