NUK's sister school, Meio University from Okinawa, visited "Xiaoyao Garden" to exchange cultural and architectural ideas with NUK.

The purpose of their visit was to facilitate an exchange of ideas on language, architecture, cultural characteristics, and heritage. During their visit, the group had the opportunity to explore the renowned historical building "Xiaoyao Garden" through a guided tour led by architect Kuang-Hao Lin. Professor Shimizu and her students were deeply impressed by the painstaking attention to detail in the restoration process. They also acknowledged the city of Kaohsiung's commitment to cultural heritage conservation. Additionally, they witnessed the achievements of the National University of Kaohsiung in fostering connections between society and industry. Xing-Hao Wu, Dean of International Affairs at NUK, began the event by delivering a welcome speech in Japanese, extending a warm welcome to Professor Misato Shimizu and her visiting delegation. He highlighted the frequent interactions between the two universities since becoming sister schools and expressed confidence in deeper academic collaborations, student and faculty exchanges, and more in the future. During the event, students and faculty members from both universities shared insights into their unique architectural and cultural heritage. This course aims to lay a strong foundation for their four-year university journey, encompassing academic, adaptational, and interpersonal aspects. With this program, students will develop problem-solving skills, independent learning abilities, and more. On the 12th, the first course "Setting Sail for the Future and Guiding Learning Directions" encouraged students to excel in their fields and explore different domains. She was born in 1962 in East Brandenburg, Germany. At the age of 3, her father discovered her exceptional talent, and by the age of 6, she was introduced to canoeing. Olympic canoeing events include singles, doubles, and fours, testing balance and team synchronization. Fischer went on to compete in six Olympic Games, amassing an impressive total of eight gold medals and four silver medals. She also achieved 27 World Championship titles. Notably, she holds the record for being both the youngest and oldest gold medalist in Olympic history, making her an exceptional athlete.Fischer mentioned that during her competitive years, she was an active athlete, a university student, and a mother of two children. Balancing her career, education, family, and social life required careful time and energy management. For example, she adhered to a routine of going to bed and waking up early, even getting up at 4 AM to work on her graduation thesis. She shared that her mental resilience was the key to her success in winning gold medals. Maintaining a calm and composed mindset was crucial, especially since she is not particularly tall (compared to most German athletes). She relied on solid training to strengthen her skills and resilience to stand out. Additionally, she understood that victories and defeats are a part of sports, and she never let losses deter her. Instead, she used them as opportunities for self-improvement and growth.Fischer also revealed that despite her numerous gold medal wins, the prize money was insufficient to sustain her livelihood and support her family. NUK Summer School debuts, inviting students from partner schools to Taiwan for SDGs exchange and cultural experience.

More than 30 students from partner schools from Vietnam, Malaysia, Canada, Thailand, Japan, and South Korea came to the National University of Kaohsiung (NUK) to participate in the 8-day program, which includes courses centered around "Climate Governance and Sustainability," "Exploration of Taiwanese Culture," and "Mandarin Learning." The course is also open to the students from the NUK, looking forward to strengthening cultural exchanges between countries through activities.In his opening speech, Wu Xinghao, Director of International Affairs, sincerely welcomed all participating students and shared with them the efforts of the NUK towards SDGs in the past few years. On the first day of the program, we were honored to have Professor Gracia Marin Duran, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Laws of University College London, deliver an engaging presentation on the development of the EU CBAM, the Paris Agreement, and the WTO legal compatibility.Having Professor Thomas Schomerus from Leuphana Universität Lüneburg's Leuphana Law School as a speaker on the following day is truly a prestigious opportunity. Professor Schomerus holds the Professorship for Public Law, in particular on Energy and Environmental Law. We are privileged to have him deliver a speech addressing the development of renewable energy in the European Union and Germany.During the activity, participants were actively engaged in discussions and discussed the challenges faced by their respective countries. Professor Schomerus emphasized that each country encounters different challenges in energy transition due to variations in geographical conditions, climate, population, and economic development levels. However, in the long term, from the perspectives of climate adaptation, energy independence, and cost-effectiveness, countries should remain committed to the development of alternative decarbonized energy sources and actively build policy frameworks to encourage and support these efforts.The follow-up course activities included sessions on climate change-related topics, Chinese language learning courses, as well as off-campus visits to the National Museum of Taiwan History, Chimei Museum, a trip to Meinong and Qishan Old Street, and a visit to the Huisun Forest Recreation Area. National University of Kaohsiung and Shu-Te University jointly formed the "Indigenous Culture Exchange Activities of Austronesian Culture" delegation.

This team visited the Philippines to learn from the local government, industry, and academia about their efforts in cultural preservation, experiences, and development. The delegation also promoted the unique characteristics of Taiwan's indigenous cultures. During this visit, they also received a promise from Junard "Ahong" Q. Chan, the mayor of Lapu-Lapu, Cebu, to help connect sister schools with the University of Cebu. The "Indigenous Culture Exchange Activities of Austronesian Culture" activity was supported by the Short-term Mobility Program of the Office of International Affairs at NUK. The teams from both universities started planning and training in April, with the official visit commencing on June 26 and concluding on July 2. Spanning over three months, the group of 11 members included representatives from various indigenous tribes such as Paiwan, Atayal, Amis, Bunun, and individuals of Han Chinese who share a strong passion for indigenous culture.During their exchange in the Philippines, the students and teachers enthusiastically showcased various aspects of Taiwan's indigenous culture, including traditional dances and crafts. Their efforts resonated with local high school students and community members, fostering connections between people of the same Austronesian linguistic family. This cultural exchange attracted attention and created a warm and friendly atmosphere between the two island nations.The participating students had a profound realization of the importance of English speaking and communication skills. Through the interaction process, they understood the diverse richness of Austronesian Island cultures. They witnessed the efforts of the local indigenous people to actively develop their characteristics and combine life and economy, which is worth learning from, and even referring to life planning and returning to their hometowns for employment. For instance, the students embarked on cultural heritage tours in Cebu, deepening their understanding of local traditions through visits to communities such as the Badjao and Aeti tribes. These visits allowed them to systematically explore various aspects of local cultures, including food, clothing, housing, rituals, and traditional dances.#SDG4 #SDG17

During the visit, President Yueh-Tuan Chen of the National University of Kaohsiung warmly welcomed them and expressed both universities' commitment to further collaboration in teaching, research, faculty and student exchange, and sports. Yueh-Tuan Chen stated that both universities established their sister school relationship and signed a student exchange agreement in 2018. Over the years, there has been frequent exchange of students and faculty. For example, in the 111th academic year, eight Srinakharinwirot University (SWU) students applied for exchange. With the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic subsiding, she believes that the interaction between the two institutions will become even more frequent in the future. Notably, both universities share similar philosophies, placing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the core of their institutional governance. SWU is Thailand's first national teachers' university, established in 1949 and named by King Bhumibol Adulyadej in honor of his mother, Queen Srinagarindra.The Office of International Affairs at the National University of Kaohsiung coordinated this exchange activity between the two universities. Xing-Hao WU, Dean of International Affairs at NUK, mentioned that soccer is one of the national sports in Thailand. He highlighted that NUK is aligned with the national policy and has been actively developing soccer programs. The university's soccer team formed just a year ago, has already succeeded by winning the male third division championship in the University Football Association and advancing to the male second division. Wu expressed optimism about the potential for both universities to use sports exchanges to facilitate interactions among teachers, coaches, and athletes. This year (2023), during the summer vacation, they have invited professional instructors from the "Tesla supplier" Sha Yang YE to impart knowledge in mechanics and intelligent manufacturing. This initiative aims to gradually establish a foundation in science and language skills, which the students will put to good use as they prepare to form teams and compete in the Top International Robotics Tournament (TIRT) scheduled for October. Chin-Chung Yu, the tutor of the Science Communication Club and Associate Professor of the Department of Applied Physics, expressed that the university is fulfilling its social responsibility through the University Social Responsibility (USR) initiative and responding to the national bilingual education policy. In response to an invitation from Principal Juan-Juan Li of the Ke-Liao Junior High School, they established a "Bilingual Creative Science Club." This club designed three science (experimental) sessions paired with one English teaching session to cultivate scientific literacy and English proficiency.Over one academic year (111), the program has conducted over 30 lessons. Topics covered include aerodynamics, pressure, buoyancy, understanding campus plants, optics, 3D printing, familiarization with electronic components, and basic programming courses. These subjects have been integrated with English teaching, resulting in 31 lessons.Ph.D. Huei-Shih Liao combines English and scientific elements in her teaching approach. She designs diverse materials, such as question-and-answer sessions and some videos, to enhance students' interest in learning. She also uses LINE group chat to distribute vocabulary assignments and track progress, encouraging students to urge each other.In addition, to expand students' horizons, Wan-Sheng Su, editor of the National Taiwan Science Education Center, and Jian-Heng Chou, professor of Vanung University, have arranged to guide students through practical operations. They demonstrated concepts such as buoyancy and thermodynamics, visualizing abstract physics ideas.For instance, Jian-Heng Chou used heating alcohol lamps to generate water vapor to demonstrate water thermal expansion and reaction force work. He used the " Stirling engine " to illustrate the principle of isolated gas undergoing expansion when heated to perform external work (e.g., driving a wheel) and then contracting as it cools down. Subsequently, the process repeats with further heating, creating a basic engine structure.The efforts of the Yu Jinzhong team have also attracted the attention of " Sha Yang YE," the world's largest motor gearbox manufacturing company and a part of Tesla's supply chain. In February of this year (2023), Chairman Mr. Feng-Chung Tsai led a delegation to visit, discussing cooperation on national education robotics programming and practical courses. They even discussed the possibility of inviting participation in competitions. Additionally, their affiliated partner, Aishang Technology's manager, LU Fang-Chung, will give classes to students in the summer of August.NUK's "Science Communication Club" mainly comprises teachers and students from the Department of Applied Physics. A total of 5 students are involved in providing club-based lessons. These students transform the knowledge acquired from their freshman general physics, sophomore laboratory courses, and junior-year electronics studies into scientific teaching materials. They bring dynamic and lively content to junior high school students’ lessons through simple demonstrations and instructional activities.This approach allows NUK's students to review and contemplate the knowledge they have gained. It enables them to refine their physics knowledge application further and cultivate their ability to handle situations, make decisions, and improve their verbal communication skills. Overseas Students at National University of Kaohsiung Embrace Early Dragon Boat Festival Celebration with Rice Dumplings and Academic Support.

Invite overseas students to enjoy meals and care about their academic studies and school life. Dean of International Affairs Xing-Hao Wu repeatedly emphasized the importance of safety outside. Especially for overseas students staying in Taiwan and working part-time, they should check the legality and safety of their work to spend their summer vacation happily.Hsing-Hao Wu stated that among the overseas students studying at NUK, there are 232 undergraduate students and 20 exchange students, many of whom are from Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, and other countries. This reflects the university's active cooperation with the government's successful promotion of The New Southbound Policy.Furthermore, in March of this year (2023), the "International Foundation Program" was established, aiming to provide a foundation for overseas students who are interested in studying but have no prior knowledge of the Chinese language. The recent announcement indicated that a total of 43 degrees across 23 departments/centers within the university have successfully passed the evaluation. The recognized accreditation period extends from the 112 academic year to the 118 academic year, highlighting the excellent quality of education in NUK's diverse degree programs.The NUK carried out external evaluations (Higher Education Quality Certification) and internal self-assessments to enhance self-evaluation and improvement. Despite pandemic-related delays and hosting the National Intercollegiate Athletic Games, all 23 departments (43 degrees) successfully passed the evaluations.President Yueh-Tuan Chen expressed gratitude for the hard work of colleagues.
