【Translator: Zhi-Yu Yang】【Promotion of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) series】2024-01-25 The sister school of the National University of Kaohsiung, Kyung Hee University in South Korea, recently visited the Kaohsiung campus. The faculty and students engaged in a two-week cultural exploration and study tour, immersing themselves in Taiwanese culture and customs while enjoying the unique local atmosphere and the comfortable weather in southern Taiwan during their visit. The organizer of the "Winter Special Program at Kyung Hee University" and Associate Professor Wang Qing-Dong of the Department of East Asian Languages and Literature at NUK stated that the program took place from January 23th to February 4th. The main participants were Kyung Hee University's Department of Korean Language and Literature students. The program included not only classroom learning sessions on topics such as "Applied Philosophy," "Comparison of Western and Asian Cultures," "Modern History of Taiwan," and "Taiwanese Ethnic Groups and Languages," but also visits to cultural and historical sites in Taiwan. Destinations included the "Anping Fort National Historic Site" in Tainan, the "Taiwan Indigenous Peoples Cultural Park" in Pingtung, the "Lianchihtan Scenic Area" in Kaohsiung, and the southernmost tip of Taiwan, "Eluanbi," providing the participants with firsthand experiences of Taiwan's cultural evolution and rich natural landscapes.Wang Qing-Dong mentioned that the interaction between the faculty and students of the Department of East Asian Languages and Literature, including the Korean Language program, and more than 40 sister schools in Korea, including Kyung Hee University, has been enthusiastic. Through such overseas study programs, they maintain active communication and exchange. These activities facilitate mutual understanding and help students in the Korean Language program gain practical experience, allowing them to enhance their language skills for future study exchanges in Korea or employment in the professional field.Since its inception in 2016, the first youth action institute has been well-received by Korean students. The program was temporarily suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it resumed in 2023 as the situation improved. Despite Taiwan's recent cold wave, Kaohsiung's relatively warm winters are attractive to Korean participants accustomed to consistently low temperatures, including lows of minus 10 degrees Celsius in their home country.Participant and Kyung Hee University student Yin Yi-Zai expressed that with only one semester left before graduation, he seized the opportunity to participate in the overseas study program in Taiwan. Recognizing the numerous historical similarities between Korea and Taiwan and the mutual influence of their cultures, he looks forward to a journey filled with valuable experiences.#SDG17 @Department of East Asian Languages and Literature &Activities

"UI GreenMetric World University Rankings": NUK Advances to 285th Place, Achieving Success in Promoting Environmental Sustainability.

sdgs icon sdgs icon sdgs icon sdgs icon sdgs icon sdgs icon sdgs icon
【Translator : Siou-Yao Han】【Promotion of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) series】2024-01-03 The National University of Kaohsiung (NUK) has once again made it to the world rankings! In the latest "UI GreenMetric World University Rankings," NUK's global ranking has risen from 319th to 285th place, entering the top quarter. This reflects the university's commitment to incorporating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into its core administrative governance, successfully practicing and promoting the concept of a green university.President Yueh-Tuan Chen of the National University of Kaohsiung (NUK) stated that linking with society and industries, and responding to national policies, has always been the school's goal. In 2022, NUK took the lead in responding to the government's "Net Zero 2050" policy, declaring its commitment to the direction of becoming a "green university." In addition, the university has been actively installing public art to shape the cultural atmosphere on campus and promote environmental education. These efforts have contributed to the positive results in the "UI GreenMetric World University Rankings," and President Chen attributes this success to the collective efforts of all faculty, staff, and students. NUK will continue its endeavors in promoting environmental sustainability, education, and research. The "UI GreenMetric World University Rankings" is constructed based on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) indicators, with evaluation categories encompassing "Setting and Infrastructure," "Energy and Climate Change," "Waste," "Water," "Transportation," and "Education and Research." The 2023 edition of this ranking was organized by Universitas Indonesia and was released last month on December 5th. A total of 1,183 universities from 84 countries participated in the competition, including 31 universities from Taiwan. The Office of General Affairs at the National University of Kaohsiung (NUK) took the lead in participating in this ranking. Mr. Shih-Heng Tung, the Dean of General Affairs, pointed out that NUK has been actively applying for the ranking since 2022, and the university's performance has improved consistently. Moving from 319th place in 2022 to 285th place in 2023, significant improvements were observed in all six evaluation categories. This indicates the continuous refinement of the university's environmental strategies and practices. For example, in the "Setting and Infrastructure" category, the National University of Kaohsiung (NUK) in Taiwan is ranked 8th among participating schools. This recognition is attributed to the university's commitment to environmental sustainability from its inception, marked by the signing of the "Talloires Declaration (June 5, 2004)," making it the first green university in Taiwan. The university's campus, formerly agricultural fields and fishponds acquired through land requisition by the Kaohsiung City Government, spans 82.5 hectares. After a series of environmental restoration efforts, the campus now boasts a forest and vegetation coverage of 51.64%.Furthermore, within the NUK campus, there are ecological ponds, East Lake, ecological water channels, and natural watercourse. In addition, there are 10 pieces of public art scattered throughout the campus, including installations like "Le Zai Yiqi (Have fun together)." The university has also integrated the surrounding 300 hectares into a university community, promoting environmental education and management under the concept of the "lung of the community." This approach not only attracts people for recreation but also facilitates outdoor education. In the "Transportation" category, the National University of Kaohsiung (NUK) stands out, ranking 10th among participating schools in Taiwan. This recognition is attributed to several measures, such as controlling motorcycle access to the campus. All motorcycles of faculty, staff, and students, except for delivery and official vehicles, are required to be parked in designated areas. Additionally, NUK has collaborated with the Kaohsiung CityGovernment and YouBike, implementing 10 bike-sharing stations across the campus. This initiative facilitates easy movement for faculty, staff, students, and the public. Moreover, the university manages vehicle numbers through a campus entrance fee for cars, and it has planned five locations for "shared taxi" pick-up points, encouraging the use of public transportation and reducing reliance on private vehicles.#SDG4 #SDG6 #SDG7 #SDG9 #SDG11 #SDG12 #SDG13 @Department of General Affairs &Research

【Translator:Siou-Yao Han】【Promotion of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) series】2023-11-16 On the 15th, the Ministry of Justice, the Ocean Affairs Council, and the National University of Kaohsiung jointly held the "International Conference on Administrative Enforcement Mechanism: Evolution and Prospects." The conference included Japanese scholars and Filipino officials sharing their experiences and the Administrative Enforcement Agency presentation of the "Traffic Enforcement Camera in Administrative Execution." This event aimed not only to review the development and achievements of The Administrative Execution Act but also to facilitate interdisciplinary and inter-agency exchanges among experts. It aimed to enhance administrative efficiency while embodying the spirit of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).The conference is being held at the National University of Kaohsiung, where President Yueh-Tuan Chen stated that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the core of the university's governance. This collaboration involves the Ministry of Justice and the Ocean Affairs Council to facilitate cooperation between academic institutions and administrative agencies. Together, they aim to actualize principles of fairness, justice, safeguarding maritime sovereignty, and preserving marine ecosystems, embodying the spirit of SDG 14 (Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Resources) and SDG 16 (Promotion of Peaceful and Inclusive Societies, Ensuring Access to Justice for All).Political Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Justice, Tsai Bi-chung, expressed that with the rapid changes in today's society and the emergence of new challenges, it is crucial to proactively create opportunities for collaboration. This initiative led to the joint organization of this seminar by the Administrative Enforcement Agency, the National University of Kaohsiung (NUK), and the Ocean Affairs Council. Tsai highlighted that the Administrative Enforcement Agency, established 23 years ago, has shown outstanding performance. It has effectively utilized technology in law enforcement, including drones, VR videos, and license plate recognition systems, resulting in the collection of fines exceeding 600 billion NTD. Simultaneously, it has actively exercised public authority while caring for the disadvantaged.Chairperson of the Ocean Affairs Council, Bi-ling Kuan, mentioned in her address that there has been a surge in illegal sand dredging by Chinese vessels trespassing into Taiwanese waters. Dealing with such matters necessitates collaborative efforts across multiple agencies. The Ocean Affairs Council has actively urged society to recognize the severity of these actions. In May of this year (2023), an international conference was convened, gathering scholars from both domestic and international to highlight Taiwan's determination to safeguard its sovereignty and marine ecosystems. Kuan further emphasized her past proposal amendments about the Sand and Gravel Excavation Act and Law on the Exclusive Economic Zone and the Continental Shelf of the Republic of China. The amendments contributed significantly, from nearly 4,000 illegal sand dredging incidents before the amendments to only seven incidents since their enactment, showcasing their deterrent effect.Minister Yu-yuan Huang of the Administrative Enforcement Agency introduced our country as a pioneer in establishing a dedicated enforcement agency for public law-related financial obligations. Since its establishment, the agency has actively upheld core values of "justice and care" with "compliance with the law." Not only has it kept pace with the times by leveraging technology to enhance enforcement methods, but it has also extended a helping hand to marginalized communities, demonstrating a balanced approach of strict enforcement and compassion towards the underprivileged. The second specialized presentation, titled "Implementing SDGs through Administrative Enforcement: Enforcement against Transboundary Sand Dredging," was jointly presented by Director Chou Huai-lien from the Shilin Branch of the Administrative Enforcement Agency of the Ministry of Justice and Colonel of Philippine Coast Guard Johonsan Fabilane from the Philippines. The third presentation, titled "A Brief Discussion on the Potential Future Directions of Administrative Enforcement Delivery," was delivered by Enforcement Officer Zhang Jun-jia from the Pingtung Branch of the Administrative Enforcement Agency of the Ministry of Justice.#SDG14 #SDG16

During the visit, they shared experiences in incorporating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into campus governance, promoting gender equity education, analyzing the legal framework for promoting gender equity in Taiwan and Japan, and discussing practical implementation. Additionally, they met with representatives from the University of the Ryukyus to discuss academic exchanges, further deepening the relationship between the institutions. The Office of International Affairs coordinated this visit, with the Director of Office of International Affairs of NUK, Xing-hao Wu, accompanying the delegation from October 27th to 31st. Vice Governor 池田竹州 of Okinawa personally welcomed President Yueh-Tuan Chen and delegations, expressing warm regards. He emphasized that the Gender Equality Symposium organized by the Okinawa Prefectural Government is a chance to learn from Taiwan's experiences and achievements and to make Okinawa a model for the rest of Japan.During the symposium, Yueh-Tuan Chen emphasized that campuses are a crucial field for gender equity education. Taiwan has been implementing the "Gender Equity Education Act" for many years, which not only underscores its importance but also regulates its promotion at all levels of education, ensuring its integration into the curriculum. The results of these efforts are reflected in the "Global Gender Inequality Index (GII)," where Taiwan's GII value is low and consistently ranks among the top Asian countries, which means Taiwan has less gender inequality. However, there is still room for improvement.Yueh-Tuan Chen highlighted the National University of Kaohsiung (NUK) as an example, where NUK has made SDGs the core of institutional governance, linking them with industry and society, and also organized various gender equity education activities. For instance, in September, a course titled "The Goal of University Education," where experts taught students and faculty how to express emotions and develop interpersonal skills effectively. Additionally, NUK has invited lawyers to share insights on gender equality issues and trends in their "Excellence Lecture" series. The panel of speakers and discussants at the event included 藏根美智子, a member of the Okinawa Prefectural Government's Board of Education, Xing-hao Wu, the Director of Office of International Affairs of NUK, and 杉岡風希, a Japanese student currently studying. The Director of Education at the Prefectural Government, 半嶺滿, and the Vice President of the University of the Ryukyus, 喜納育江, were also present throughout the event.藏根美智子 mentioned that she had visited many elementary schools, middle schools, and universities in Taiwan. She observed the Taiwanese government's dedicated efforts in planning teaching materials and curricula for students. This has become an important reference for educational policies in Okinawa Prefecture Government and even in Japan as a whole.Xing-hao Wu stated that promoting gender equality education helps to eliminate discrimination and further promotes the construction of a more equal, diverse, and inclusive society. He also analyzed the follow-up to the recent "Me Too Movement" in Taiwan, including immediate legal amendments and the current situation and prospects of women in entrepreneurship. While 杉岡風希 shared her own experiences of learning and living at the National University of Kaohsiung, as well as the inspiration she gained from these experiences. In addition, Yueh-Tuan Chen and the delegation also paid a visit to the University of the Ryukyus, where they were received by the university's president, 西田睦. Both parties exchanged views on academic exchanges, faculty and student visits, and reached a consensus on deepening their relationship. In June of this year (2023), the National University of Kaohsiung hosted the "2023 Asia Virtual Academy International Symposium" with a focus on "Climate Resilience and Sustainable Society." The Vice President of the University of the Ryukyus, 喜納育江, led a delegation to participate in presenting research findings and signed an MOU on behalf of the university.#SDG5 #SDG17
